- Hi! If you have a SCSI interface on your 500, then the controller you get
- will usually have a place to put 1 HD in it. Any other drives you want to
- add...to a total of 7...will have to go in another case/s, and loop together
- to the controller with a cable. There is USUALLY a place on the back of a
- controller for this. Be warned though! SCSI now comes in SEVERAL varieties!!
- SCSI-1 (or usually just SCSI) is a 50-pin Centronics connector. SCSI-2 can be
- EITHER a 50-pin centronics, OR a 25-pin SCSI-2 connector. While there ARE
- adapters to use SCSI-2 devices on a SCSI-1 controller, they are expensive!
- SCSI- 3 is out there as well, and I do not know what connectors are on them.
- As to RAM expansion, MOST controllers for the 500 have a place for more RAM.
- You can usually add from 2 - 8 meg on them, and most GVP controllers for the
- 500 also have a slot for a 286 mini-card in them. So, you have a WIDE variety
- to choose from! As for availability, prices run from $30 for a cheapie with no
- RAM or HD, up. If you are not interested in up-grading higher than 1.3, I have
- a SUPRA DRIVE, which is a HD controller for the 500 w/ 2 meg RAM on it, and
- the seperate box that holds the 1st HD (no HD though!), for $50. I have not
- checked to see if it will work with soft-kicking a later OS! I will also have
- a GVP HD8+ (no HD either) which has the slot for the 286 card and up to 8-meg
- RAM inside (4- megs maybe available),(as soon as my 2000 gets back from the
- shop and I can test it!) :), for about $100 or so. Hope this helps your
- understanding of SCSI controllers for the 500! Take care, and TTYL!
